School Joyful learning The heart of wingra

Music and Drama at Wingra

The music curriculum at Wingra is guided by Holly Reif. Rooms 100 and 102 have two 30-minute music classes each week. The older children meet once a week for a music class and have the choice to join the school choir which meets once a week for 45 minutes. These classes develop both skill and understanding in the basic elements of music via experiences in body percussion, speech, singing, movement, folk dance, games, and playing on pitched and unpitched percussion instruments. There is also occasionto learn general concepts of melodic/harmonic instruments such as guitar and piano. Many music performing opportunities in the classroom and during Friday Follies are also available to all interested students.

Band

The band program is also popular at Wingra. Students 9 years and older may participate in an independent band program under the auspices of Overture, Inc., an organization that provides band programs for private and parochial schools in the Madison area. Children who enroll pay an additional fee to receive one semi-private lesson and one large group band rehearsal each week. The Band Director, Yvonne Schwinge, has been at Wingra for many years and is a well-loved teacher. Families are invited to winter and spring band concerts that feature soloists, small ensembles, and the whole band.

Music and drama performances

Drama and music are important components of Wingra's curriculum, and our students perform both formally and informally throughout the year. In addition to the band concerts, all-school get-togethers for students and staff, known as Friday Follies, occur monthly and are a favorite variety show of music, skits, and presentations. Each spring, members of the junior and senior classes celebrate Kids' Night Out, an evening of skits written, cast, directed, crewed, and performed by students.
